                      Napier Egyptian Series Necklace

This is a fun and interesting piece. Part of the Egyptian series. At first glance it looks to be 1950s, but it’s actually 1970s. Besides the scarab casting being featured in the book, do you see the other clue that helps date this piece?

The main clue is the hook. It is crafted from half-round brass wire and is marked only NAPIER without a copyright symbol. The half-round wire used in the 1970s was thinner than the half-round wire used during the 1950s. Additionally, the half-round wire of the 1950s was wider and at times included the copyright mark. We have known this grouping was from 1957 into the 1960s. Here’s a feature from WWD in 1960. Over the course of the years, the design used both round and square wire utilizing both warm and cool rhinestone tones. According to employees this collection was very expensive to produce, as evidenced by the retail price of the necklace. (copyrighted content) An airy overlapping of golden circles set with two-toned blue stones creates unusual style from The Napier Co., New York ($17.50 each). WWD, Friday February 19, 1960.
